Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
-
You'll receive one-on-one care with a doctorate-trained pelvic floor physical therapist who has completed extensive postgraduate training in pelvic health. Both orthopedic and pelvic expertise are integrated into each session to provide the best possible patient outcomes.
Every session is with the same clinician and is tailored to your goals, current symptoms, and your individual response to treatment.
In addition to treating your current condition, time is taken to understand why your symptoms are happening in the first place. Identifying the underlying cause is often the key to lasting relief. Your initial evaluation (first appointment) includes a comprehensive whole-body assessment to determine what's contributing to your condition. This may include assessing the hips, low back, deep stabilizing muscles, and nervous system to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
-
Your first appointment is a 90-minute initial evaluation designed to better understand you, your symptoms, and the bigger picture of what may be contributing to your concerns. Prior to your visit, you’ll complete a detailed intake form so I can take time to thoughtfully prepare for our session.
During your appointment, we’ll spend time talking through your story, symptoms, goals, and any questions you may have. From there, we’ll move into an individualized physical assessment based on your comfort level and needs. If time allows, we may begin treatment during the first visit, otherwise we will begin treatment at the following visit.
Internal pelvic floor exams are never required and can always be deferred to a later session. In many cases, I am able to gather valuable information externally, and care is always collaborative and guided by your comfort level.
-
Initial evaluations (your first appointment) are 85 minutes long (90 minutes reserved) to allow ample time to understand your story, symptoms, goals, and the bigger picture of what may be contributing to your concerns.
Follow-up visits are most commonly 55 minutes long (60 minutes reserved), allowing dedicated one-on-one time for hands-on treatment, ongoing assessment, exercise, and education tailored to your needs.
For patients with more complex concerns or those traveling from out of town, extended sessions are also available, including 85-minute (90 minutes reserved) and 115-minute (2 hours reserved) appointment options.

No, you can schedule right away!
No referral is needed to begin physical therapy in Connecticut through something called “Direct Access”, meaning you can schedule an evaluation without first seeing your physician.
If you plan to use out-of-network benefits, some insurance plans may have their own requirements for reimbursement, such as a physician referral or signed plan of care. If you’re unsure, I recommend checking with your insurance provider.
-
Yes. Care is never passed between providers, allowing for a more consistent, individualized experience and a deeper understanding of your symptoms and goals over time.
-
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended, but there’s no need to stress about what to wear. If you’re coming straight from work or another commitment, gowns are available in the clinic so there’s no need to bring extra clothes.
Pelvic Health Specific FAQs
-
No. Internal pelvic floor exams are never required and can always be deferred to a later session, or not done at all. A great deal of information can often be gathered through external assessment techniques and a thorough understanding of your symptoms and goals. Care is always collaborative and guided by your comfort level.
-
Absolutely. Previous pelvic floor physical therapy does not mean you’ve “failed” treatment or that progress is no longer possible. Many patients come in after trying other approaches, and together we work to better understand the bigger picture of what may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.
-
Every person and situation is different, so the timeline for improvement can vary. Factors such as how long symptoms have been present, what may be contributing to them, and how your body responds to treatment can all influence recovery. In general, symptoms that have been present for a longer period of time often take longer to improve.
Some people notice changes early on, while others benefit from a more gradual approach. Within the first 3–5 visits, there is often a much clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms and how to best move forward with treatment.
